Boarding a plane with a wheelchair shouldn’t feel like an Olympic challenge—but let’s be honest, it often does. At TUR4all Travel, we want your journey to start with clarity and confidence. Here’s what you really need to know.
1. Request assistance (but don’t blindly trust the system)
In Europe, airlines are required to offer assistance to passengers with disabilities—free of charge. However, you must request it at least 48 hours in advance (some airlines say 24 h, but don’t risk it).
Ideally, do this while booking and contact both the airline and the departure/arrival airports to confirm it’s properly registered.
💡 TUR4all tip: if you’re traveling with a power wheelchair, make sure to provide the exact model, battery type, and weight. Some batteries require special handling.
2. Prep a “carry-on kit” for you and your wheelchair. Include:
- A medical report (translated to English if traveling abroad).
- A laminated card with basic wheelchair handling instructions (how to fold it, disconnect batteries, lock brakes…).
- Medication in your carry-on, never in checked luggage.
- Zip ties or duct tape in case parts need to be secured for transport.
🎒 Pro tip: bring a change of clothes and personal hygiene items in your backpack. If luggage is delayed, you’ve still got the essentials.
3. The tricky parts: boarding, deplaning and handling
Your wheelchair travels in the cargo hold. You’ll be transferred to an aisle chair to reach your seat. It’s not glamorous, but it can be made bearable:
- Ask to board first and exit last.
- Ensure you can keep your cushion or removable parts with you in the cabin.
- Take photos of your chair before boarding in case it arrives damaged.
✈️ If your wheelchair is damaged during the flight, the airline is legally obligated to repair or replace it—and provide a loaner if needed.
4. When things go wrong, claim it (calmly but firmly)
Keep all documentation, photos and any receipts if you had to pay for alternate transport or rent a chair. Compensation is possible—but you need to push for it.
And if you booked with TUR4all Travel, you’re not alone. We’ll guide you through the process and make sure you’re heard.
